A Journey Through Transformation
Bound by Flight
Dan approached this project with a clear vision, sharing an email filled with photographs, symbolic references, personal thoughts, and even poems. Rather than starting with a single image, we began by understanding the ideas and emotions behind the piece. The jester became the central symbol, representing the masks we sometimes wear to protect ourselves or perform for others. Together, we developed a surreal composition where the jester is pulled into a trash bin, while the bin itself is consumed by a black hole. Each element represents another layer of release, allowing an old identity to disappear completely and make room for growth. Projects like this remind me that tattoo design is as much about listening as it is about drawing. The most meaningful concepts often emerge when personal stories, symbolism, and visual language come together into a single composition.
Nelli came to me wanting to capture a period of transformation that was unfolding across many areas of her life. Rather than focusing on a single event, she wanted her tattoo to become a visual representation of change, growth, and the person she was becoming. She began by creating a Pinterest board filled with images that resonated with her—not only for their aesthetic, but also for their symbolism, placement, and overall feeling. During our online consultation, we explored those references together, identifying the key themes, intentions, and design requirements that would shape the project. On the day of her appointment, we translated those ideas directly onto her arm, refining the composition and allowing the concept to evolve naturally with the anatomy of her body. One of my favorite aspects of this piece was creating a visual journey through the four classical elements, moving upward until it culminated in The Magician tarot card and the Third Eye. Together, these symbols became a projection of awareness, intention, and the new chapter she was about to enter as a mother. For me, custom tattooing is about more than creating a composition it’s about translating a person’s story into symbols that can continue evolving with them long after the tattoo is finished.
This project began with a runner, Marc, who wanted to create a tattoo that reflected both his connection to nature and the trails where he feels most at home. The Red-shouldered Hawk became the central symbol, representing awareness, resilience, and freedom. He also wanted to incorporate subtle inspiration from Native American art, creating a design that felt rooted in both the landscape and its history. Together, we gathered visual references and explored the symbolism, composition, and placement before translating the concept onto his body. Inspired by the Wissahickon, the final design combines the hawk with the surrounding trees and rock formations, allowing the landscape to become part of the story rather than just a background. What made this project even more meaningful was that his close friend was also getting a tattoo at the same time. While his piece featured a Red-shouldered Hawk, his friend’s design centered around an eagle—two different tattoos connected by a shared experience. For me, this project was about balancing personal symbolism with the environment that inspired it, creating a piece that feels both deeply individual and naturally connected to the place that shaped it.

Finding Order in ChaosÂ
Emily and Nicole wanted a tattoo that captured the things that connect them most their love for cycling, hiking, the mountains, and the adventures they’ve shared together. Through email, they sent me personal reference photos of the places and experiences that represent their relationship, along with tattoo references they had found online. As we developed the piece, Mont Blanc became part of their shared landscape. The final detail came from something even more personal: a poem Nicole had written for Emily, bringing their own words into a design built from their memories.
Archit came to me wanting to transform a scar from childhood not by hiding it, but by making it part of the story. He wanted to expose the scar and make our wounds feel more familiar, giving something once connected to pain a new meaning. Through ideas of growth and progression, we explored eyes, teeth, flowers, surveillance, and regality. The scar became part of the composition itself a way of changing our relationship with what happened, so we can carry it forward with less pain and attachment.
Dani came from Ukraine, carrying with him the experience of migration shaped by the conflict in his country. In the middle of so much change and uncertainty, he wanted his tattoo to reflect a stoic perspective: the idea of facing what we cannot control while finding meaning within it. The concept became a meeting point between stoicism and the beauty of chaos. I chose Trash Polka as the visual language because its fragmentation, contrast, and apparent disorder allowed us to turn that tension into something intentional chaos not as something to erase, but something that can become part of who we are. Dani sent me his visual references through Instagram, and from those images we built a piece that translates his experience into a personal symbol of adaptation, perspective, and moving forward.
